Switch VLAN HP Procurve : reset of configuration

Hope this can be usefull for someone. Il you have a HP Procurve 1700-8 (J9079A) 802.1Q switch you can reset the configuration back to default (because of bad configuration or lost password). There is no reset button on the switch box nor inside. To reset the configuration simply put a RJ cable from port 1 to port 2. Light up the switch, wait for bootup to complete and shut it down. Remove the cable and power up again. Your switch is back to default configuration.

Before you do this be aware that you need to be at FIRMWARE V1.07 or later.

Anything older than 1.07, while it resets everything on the switch back to default, it doesn’t reset the VLAN’s on the ports.

So if you changed the VLAN settings on all your ports and then tried to reset the switch, you’ve bricked it.

You’ll never be able to get to the web page since the VLAN doesn’t match the default switch IP.
